Design sprint-inspired, collaborative design process.

As Doctor Care Anywhere looked to expand its healthcare by connecting virtual primary care with secondary care, a fundamental proposition was to improve the journey for patients who require diagnostic tests.

As part of the improved journey, specialist doctors would review a patient's test results, alongside GP notes and medical records asynchronously, before recommending a treatment plan to be delivered to the patient via their GP - removing the need for 2 in-person consultations for the patient and doctor.

However, this presented several challenges:

  • Sharing patient data and documents with specialists via email or dropbox is not secure

  • Presenting critical information in multiple disjointed documents doesn't provide specialists with a good experience

  • These challenges combined present a risk to patient safety.

To overcome these challenges quickly, I designed and facilitated an accelerated process, using workshop collaboration inspired by the design sprint process. This helped the sprint team go from challenge to handing off a user-tested design to engineers for the first development sprint in just 3 weeks.

Design iterations.

Observations from user testing were fed into a further round of design iterations to refine and improve the solution.

Design system and hand off.

Once the design refinements were complete, all new components were merged into our design system, Stethoscope. Design assets and screens were then prepared for hand off to engineering, using Zeplin to document requirements and specs.

Outcomes.
Improved patient experience and reduced costs.

In traditional health care systems, it can take weeks for a patient to receive treatment if they require diagnostic tests. This often requires multiple in-person consultations; GP appointment, specialist consultation, diagnostic test, specialist review and follow up GP appointment. Painful for patients. Costly for health care providers.

Our solution had a huge impact:

  • Improved patient experience by reducing in-person appointments from 5+ to 1

  • Reduced significant health care delivery costs by removing the need for 2 in-person consultations with a specialist for most cases

  • Improved patient outcomes by reducing time to treatment from weeks to days
