The challenge.

I was approached by Audiem - a pre-fund start-up aiming to disrupt workplace engagement with machine learning - to design a SaaS concept to be included in a round of investor pitches.

The solution.

Time was tight, with the first investor meeting scheduled for the end of the week. So I started by interviewing one of the founders to gather as much information as possible about the business, its customers, potential users and future vision.

Once I had enough information, I sketched out a skeleton IA and a lo-fi wireframe for the product dashboard, before informally testing the concept with the founder.

After a few amends based on feedback from the founder, I got to designing the first UI concept. Thankfully, Audiem’s branding agency had created some detailed brand guidelines that were easy to translate into the basis for a design system.

Data visualisation is at the heart of this product, so creating an adaptable system for graphs, charts and other visualisations was key.

Following another round of feedback and amends with the founder, the final concept was ready to be included in the investor pitch deck.

Key takeaways.

  • Visual concepts that feel real can be incredibly powerful for businesses and their (potential) investors, even if the concept is more of a vision than a design derived from user insight.

  • Tight time constraints - whilst sometimes frustrating - can often be a really valuable tool for product designers; forcing us to focus on the most critical elements and not overthink things.

  • I love learning about new businesses and helping them to visualise their future.
